Wireless Terminals and Docking Stations

If you plan to connect one or two telephone sets directly to the terminal or docking station, the process is quick and easy.  If you need two telephone sets connected to the wireless unit, purchase and install a two-line "splitter" at your local Radio Shack, phone store, or discount outlet.  Following the manufacturer's Installation Manual, install the telephone cord or the line splitter into the RJ11 jack on the terminal or the docking station.

If, however, you plan to connect your unit to the pre-wiring of a home or condo, each wireless terminal and docking station may install a little differently.   In all cases, though, (including offices, yachts, and RVs) you must ensure that the wireless equipment is linked to an absolutely open line.

IMPORTANT:

The following information is meant as a guideline only.  Always follow the installation instructions received with your equipment.  If you have a question of whether your landline service is fully disconnected, please check with your local phone company.

Telephone Cable

Before going further, it would be helpful to briefly explain the setup of a telephone line or cable.  Telephone cable for the home or small office is usually referred to as "two-pair" cable...the four wires in the cable are Line 1 (the two inside pair) and Line 2 (the two outside pair).  If you have only one line in your home (one phone number), it is only the inside pair of wires that are used.  The outside pair (Line 2) are then available to use independantly or as a second incoming (cellular) line.

This is important whether or not you plan to eliminate your landline phone.  Many times, when landline phone service is discontinued, line 1 (the inside pair of wires) remain connected to the main "trunk" of the telephone company.  Connecting to this pair will ruin your wireless equipment.  (If you must use the Line 1 for your installation, check with your local phone company to be certain you are not connected at the "interface" box on the outside of your home.)  It is always best to use Line 2 for your wireless equipment

Tri-Plex Adapter:

You can use your wireless equipment with or without your landline telephone.  As a second line, you can take normal, landline calls on Line 1 of a two-line telephone and cellular calls on Line 2.  Each line will ring separately depending upon the source of the call.  Similarly, outgoing calls may be made on either line.  If you wish to use your cellular phone as a second line, you must have either two-line telephones as your extension phones, or you must use a "tri-plex" adapter connected to your wall jack.

The tri-plex adapter does not simply have three female plugs.  Each plug of the adapter will be labeled...L1, L2, L1/2.  You will connect your wireless equipment into the "L2" jack.  Any single-line telephone that you wish to ring when the cell phone is active must be connected through L2 to the wall jack.

Some docking stations are equipped with a "Line1/Line 2" switch.  This will move the active circuit in the docking station between the "pairs" of wires.  It is best to be sure this switch is in position L2 when connecting to your wall connector.

The Tri-Plex connector can be purchased at most any retail outlet that carries telephone equipment and accessories.
